Senior Technical Manager, Data Centres

Job Overview:

The role will support the Data Centre Director in ensuring the application of the technical expertise and best practice to the day-to-day data centre operations, aiming at constantly improving the technical performance, energy efficiency and downtown prevention across the campus.

Key Tasks:

  • Responsible for ensuring all Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Mode of Operations (MOP) are in place and accurate for their site (s). Provide support and assistance for other sites including peer review.
  • To ensure smooth running of the data centres, all activities the role is involved with must be focused on zero down time and adequate risk analysis and mitigation.
  • To maintain awareness of customer contractual SLA’s and KPI’s – and to work collaboratively with the Operations Team to help stay within the SLAs, ensuring excellent Customer Experience (CX)
  • To assist the site managers in providing planning assistance for high-risk activity works and ensure that they are controlled in accordance with the company’s Operating Principals and safety rules.
  • Provide input and review of site EOPs / SOP’s and MOPs.
  • Hold accountable and technically challenge third party vendors on true root cause analysis. Review outcomes and cooperate with the relevant stakeholders to recommend and implement preventative actions and improvements to processes and ways of working.
  • Build and maintain excellent knowledge of the site and technical assets, processes, standards and relevant equipment to form part of the Change control board, providing answers to technical queries and analysis of risk.
  • Provide technical risk analysis and drive the Operations risk register.
  • Assist in the review and signoff of RAMS where necessary for works taking place on site.
  • Assist the site managers in driving open problems to the completion in a timely manner.
  • Providing technical support for the wider Data Centre Operations team.
  • Review and guide the PPM schedule for critical infrastructure in terms of frequency and enhancements.
  • Build relationships with Key Critical infrastructure Vendors, with a view to query their technical teams directly. Ensure the requirements, standards and assessment methods are clear to the vendors at all times and they are being held accountable to uphold the required standards of service provision.
  • Assess and review third party capability against changing business and technical requirements. (FM provider and vendors)
  • Oversee the general quality of third party works on site, give guidance of the requirements, challenge and ensure successful completion to the required standards
  • Provide input into new design scopes as required by Design & Engineering department.
  • Provide input into the commissioning of key critical infrastructure.
  • Help ensure that all customers, staff and contractors adhere to site policies and operational processes.

Essential Requirements:

  • Membership of professional body e.g. IEE, IET, The Institute of Mechanical Engineers, CIBSE
  • Solid experience in a Facilities/Data Centre environment.
  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Electrical, BMS, PMS, UPS, chilled water and fire systems experience.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Strong and demonstrable process management experience in a live operational environment.
  • Extensive real time Incident/fault management experience in a business-critical environment
  • Managing 3rd party suppliers to deliver against stringent SLA’s.
  • Experience with Business Continuity, Risk Management, Incident Management and Change Control.
  • Highly demonstrable technical ability from either a mechanical or electrical perspective.
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety, ISO standards, and compliance.
  • Knowledge of Data Centre Customer installations, such as racks, HAC, cabling, cross connects, power, testing and customer acceptance.
  • Able to work with multiple streams of stakeholders, ranging from colleagues, service partners, clients and third part support vendors.
  • Tenacious and assertive where necessary, yet calm under pressure.
  • Attention to detail with high personal standards and the desire to complete tasks on time.
