Telehouse powers next-generation services for Mapesbury Communications
Mapesbury Communications Limited (MCom) is a privately-owned company founded in 2002 to provide connectivity solutions within the wireless and IP markets.
It has grown to become a leading carrier of voice and data communications for UK consumers and businesses.
Challenge
MCom established its business on the back of government legislation in 2002 that permitted the commercial use of the Wi-Fi spectrum for wireless internet access. The company formed a unique partnership with petrol station Texaco to develop a service offering wireless connectivity to motorists based around petrol station forecourts. These wireless hot spots were useful for business professionals such as sales representatives and engineers that needed to stay in touch with the office while on the move.
In order to provide widespread, reliable internet services, MCom required a secure location to house its IT equipment, combined with strong internet connectivity. It had to tap into the existing internet infrastructure in the UK by using the networks of major internet service providers to carry data.
Solution
After exploring a number of co-location providers MCom selected Telehouse Europe for its unparalleled connectivity. It moved its entire core IT systems and servers to the highly secure and connected facilities at Telehouse’s London Docklands facility. With all major UK Internet Service Providers (ISPs) co-locating at Telehouse it was an ideal point of interconnect, ensuring a strong wireless network for MCom to serve its growing customer base.
Robert Harris, Technical Services Director at Telehouse comments, “Telehouse is home to over 100 telecoms carriers, internet service providers, and applications service providers, acting as a major internet hub in the UK. As a neutral point of co-location it has become a thriving internet marketplace where companies have the widest possible choice of partners for connectivity.”
Telehouse Europe’s world class facilities provide MCom with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and generator back-up, temperature control, fire detection and high levels of security. This combined with 24-hour monitoring, maintenance and technical support helps safeguard MCom’s systems and ensure it can provide a reliable service to its customers.
Telehouse has continued to provide a resilient operational environment for MCom’s technology even as its business needs have evolved. The most significant being in 2005 when MCom was awarded a GSM spectrum license, and began developing niche mass market mobile services for UK consumers including low-cost international calling and mobile payment services. These
IP-based solutions required MCom to build upon its existing technology footprint at Telehouse such as adding a network subsystem, the IT component that recognises a mobile user’s location. To roll-out its mobile services MCom had to develop strategic partnerships and once again benefited from the marketplace at Telehouse with easy access to all the major mobile operators at the co-location facility.
Results
The industry leading levels of connectivity provided at Telehouse Europe have helped MCom build its business and evolve to offer solutions combining the best of data, voice and wireless.
Magnus Kelly, managing director at MCom concludes, “With Telehouse’s managed services we get peace of mind that we can provide a reliable service to our customers without having to deal with day-to-day maintenance. Its team of engineers deal quickly with any technical challenges that come up, such as patching a cable between our server and an ISP, or entering commands in the computer. This type of ‘remote hands’ means rather than travelling six hours to fix a problem, we can make one phone call, which adds up to huge time savings and lets us focus on our next generation services.”
