Telehouse Europe Becomes First Purpose-Built Colocation Facility To Gain Environmental Standard ISO 14001:2004

Sep 9, 2008

London, UK, Tuesday, 9 September 2008 - Telehouse Europe has become the first purpose built colocation facility to gain ISO 14001:2004, the internationally recognised standard for an environmental management system.

This latest accreditation for Telehouse Europe follows on from previous awards for ISO 9001: 2000 (for its commitment to quality) and ISO/IEC 27001:2005 (for its information security management systems).

Tokuji Mitsui, managing director, Telehouse Europe, comments: "The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) is internationally recognised, therefore our ISO 14001:2004 certificate is a huge achievement for us. It is a measure of our commitment to developing world class environmental, quality and information management systems. It also provides a robust management framework to help us deliver continuous improvement when it comes to environmental performance - a key issue for the whole data centre industry. The need for energy efficiency, power cost reductions and energy benchmarking has never been greater. Combined with our earlier ISO 9001:2000 and ISO/IEC 27001:2005 certifications, we continue to demonstrate to our customers and the global data centre community, that we adhere to the highest possible standards in our operational practices.”

ISO 14001:2004 specifies requirements for an environmental management system to enable an organisation to develop and implement a policy and objectives, taking into consideration legal and other requirements to which the organisation subscribes, and information about significant environmental aspects. It applies to those environmental aspects that the organisation identifies as ones it can control and influence.

The Environmental Management System was independently audited by Bureau Veritas as part of the Certification Process. According to Gary Reed, Project Client Manager at Bureau Veritas: “Telehouse Europe’s environmental policy was extremely progressive and developed quickly from pre-assessment to certification, mainly due to the positive dialogue with the board. Telehouse’s management didn’t want a badge and they weren’t after another certificate to hang on the wall. What really mattered to them, and what really showed, was their attitude towards the standard and the fact that they wanted a system which would work for them. They also wanted value from the standard, something that Bureau Veritas is very keen to promote. Overall, Telehouse Europe’s openness and approach to certification was refreshing.”

Concludes Mitsui: “For many businesses running their own data centres, it is a constant struggle to keep running costs down, heat output under control, power on and availability high. One of the reasons we chose this standard was to ensure that we reduce our impact on the environment whilst allowing our customers to do the same. We are constantly seeking to anticipate the needs of our customers and a good example of this is with our new planned data centre facility - Telehouse West in Docklands. Currently in the design phase, this new building will give us the opportunity to deploy the latest communications, monitoring and resilient power and cooling technologies, as well as adopt best practice in environmental standards such as ISO 14001. In summary, the demands from environmentally related legislation will only increase in the coming years. Our ISO 14001 award is also the result of a tremendous amount of focus, determination and hard work from all Telehouse Europe staff. As a result, it has given us the best possible framework to ensure that we remain a forward thinking company that is able to best support our customers now and in the future.”
